Village House, Quarante, Languedoc
One Bedroom, Sleeps 4 People
Quarante is a delightful, picturesque
Languedoc village whose winter population is 1460. In summer this
grows considerably as sons and daughters and their families return for
holidays and to visit their parents and grandparents.
It is about 18 km North of Narbonne and about 20 km West of Beziers.
The centre of the village is the square by the large old church
which dominates the steep narrow streets. You can get a good (midday )
meal in the bar. Post office and shops (butcher, baker, little
supermarket etc) are up near the square.
NARBONNE (market on Thursdays), BEZIERS (superb flower market on
Fridays) and PERPIGNAN (about 5 degrees warmer than its surroundings)
are lovely interesting towns to visit.
The surrounding countryside is superb. There are many, many vines and it
is a beautiful ride of about 30 km to the spectacular Languedoc National
Park. The Mediterranean beaches are about 20 minutes away, the famous
walled citadel of Carcassonne is about 50 km away and is a great day
out. You must visit the magnificent Canal du Midi which is 4 km away.
There are many picnic spots in shaded areas beneath the parasol pines.
The nearest swimming is not far away in Bize -Minervois where the locals
swim in the fresh crystal clear water and relax in the shade of the
plane trees.
It is a good idea to go between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm when
everyone is eating but then this is true of anywhere in France! Apart
from the village stores there is post office but for bigger food
shopping you could try “Intermarche” super market 8 km away in CAPESTANG.
NARBONNE (market on Thursdays), BEZIERS (superb flower market on
Fridays) and PERPIGNAN (about 5 degrees warmer than its surroundings)
are lovely interesting towns to visit.
There is a book in the house of good places to visit and we would ask
you to add to it. Do please let us know of any special restaurants you
find, places of geographic or historic interest or places suitable for a
good day out.
You must visit the Oppidum, a Gallo Roman settlement high
on a hill overlooking the Canal du Midi. Further afield are the
wonderful citadel of Minerve and Lagrasse. You are not far from the
Corbieres, Cathar castles and the spectacular “Little Yellow Train”.
Whatever your interests you will find something for you to enjoy in this
wonderful region.
The little house has three storeys
and thick stone walls to keep you cool and is in a very friendly
quarter. You will soon improve your French with the friendly neighbours
especially if you invite them for a drink!
What is there to tell you about the house itself? It is VERY French.
Full of character. If you want a villa with gold taps and a pool this
house is not for you! Dried flowers and old beams abound! There is no
garden but you can put chairs in the road as there is very little
traffic.
The lower (ground floor) room is the kitchen / dining room with fridge,
gas cooker, sink, cupboards, table and chairs. We always keep the
shutters shut during the day and then put chairs outside in the street
so we can chat to the locals.
The middle floor is a bedroom/lounge with a sofa and “pull out “ bed.
The upper floor has a double bed and a separate shower/bathroom. The
small rooms are joined by a spiral Languedoc staircase.
Not far from the house is a picnic spot in the shade overlooking the
plain towards the Pyrenees. You can easily eat there and return to the
house for a siesta!
All you need take are some bed linen and towels. You will not
need a lot in the summer. The house is ideal for two or even three if
friendly. What about a second honey moon? Or even a first one!
