AWAY from it all…Rose Cottage, Rural Haute Vienne,
Limousin
Delightful renovated rustic 2- bedroomed cottage
with pool.
Sleeps 5/6. Tranquil location, having a woodlands path directly adjacent
and a bird sanctuary lake
with viewing hut 600 metres away, total peace assured. Come and relax
completely. Tranquillity on a plate!

Welcome to Rose Cottage. Built around
160 years ago as a farm labourer's home, Rose Cottage is now fully
restored and converted into a comfortable self-catering holiday home.
Sympathetically modernised, it retains its rustic charm with exposed
original oak beams and an impressive old wood burning stove. In a quiet
hamlet close to the village of Lussac-les-Eglises, Rose Cottage has its
own private (not overlooked) sunny courtyard for outside dining,
adjacent brick barbecue, private parking and a very safe, clean swimming
pool with adjacent 24sq.m decked sun terrace, all for private use by
guests.
Two minutes' walk from the cottage we have our own playing field of
about an acre, for exclusive use by guests. The
playing field has nine-hole putting, with no charge for use, it is very
basic and just a bit of fun. Can be extended to 18 holes if you go
around twice!
The natural beauty of the landscape, quiet roads, superb cuisine and
great affordable wines make this the ideal place in which to relax and
unwind completely. Tranquillity on a plate!
We are Chris and Joan Callaghan. We retired to enjoy the beauty of rural
France two years ago. But as we wanted to stay active we chose an old
property with potential for improvement, with an adjacent derelict
cottage crying out for total renovation. It was certainly a challenge.
Our kids and grandkids thought we were mad to take it on, but now they
love it.
Rose Cottage is now totally renovated in a style which retains its
essential character. The main beams were literally hewn from the trunks
of large oaks. The original crosscut saws, found in the roof, are now
wall decorations!
The cottage is self-contained and fully equipped for easy self-catering.
There is dedicated private parking immediately outside, adjacent to a
sunny south-facing patio for outside dining by guests only.
Alternatively you may wish to snack on the pool terrace whilst
sunbathing and enjoying the swimming pool which is nearly eight metres
long but only four feet deep, safe for swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
It is a saline pool which means that the water is isotonic ("body
friendly") It is clear, it sparkles and has a soft "feel". For safety
and bathing pleasure the importance of maintaining correct water
chemical balance cannot be overstated. We achieve this in our pool by
means of a Watermaid automatic chlorinator. The bonus of this system is
that there is scarcely any perception of chlorine. No chlorine smell or
taste, no stinging eyes and no damage to swimwear or towels!
The cottage has two bedrooms; a family room which sleeps three and
another with twin beds sleeping two, with W.C. and
basin en-suite to second bedroom. The bathroom has a roomy shower,
hairdryer, pedestal basin and w.c., plus a large hot water cylinder to
give you all the hot water you need.
The living room has comfortable seating for five and the settee converts
into another bed if required. It has UK satellite TV and radio, CD and
DVD players, plus board games and a good stock of books. The kitchen is
modern and fully equipped, with a gas cooker, fridge, freezer, washing
machine, microwave, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, crockery
and glassware. We provide all linen and towels and the cottage is
cleaned every Saturday.
The project has been a great joy to plan, undertake and complete. It is
beautiful. Come and see for yourselves! Our first priority is our total
commitment to ensure that our guests feel completely at home. If there
is anything you need, just ask, we are on hand right next door.
Location
This area is known as "the land of a thousand lakes", fishing and picnic
areas abound. The nearest is Etang Murat,a bird sanctuary with a viewing
hut. It is within a few minutes' walk of our hamlet, in a location so
remote that the hut is invariably vacant!
Lac du Mondon about ten minutes' drive away offers swimming and fishing.
The large Lac de Saint Pardoux watersports complex with three beaches
(lifeguard supervised in summer) and restaurant is about thirty minutes
drive away and well worth a visit. There are good local hiking trails,
or you can enjoy a leisurely walk along one of the many tracks around
our hamlet. We have two mountain bikes for guests' use on the virtually
deserted local roads. But do remember to keep to the right!
There is a nominal charge of 5 Euros per day for use of
mountain bikes.
Also available locally are horse riding, microlighting, and several
restaurants including one of the finest in the region. Or just relax and
'chill out' with a beverage at a pavement table outside one of our
friendly bars.
Our local village Lussac-les-Eglises two kilometres away is typical of
the very best of rural France. It has a boulangerie, a small supermarket
and two friendly bar/restaurants. The ancient picturesque Roman towns of
Montmorillon and Argenton are within 30 minutes drive. The historic
cities of Limoges and Poitiers are less than an hour away by car.
Limoges is world famous for its porcelain industry. Factory/kiln visits
and the National Porcelaine Museum are worth seeing. There is an
excellent golf course, lots of shops and the Tarz-en-Arbre "treetops"
forest adventure.
The historic city of Poitiers has Futuroscope for a real day out treat.
Take a look at futuroscope.com for details.
At Magnac Laval 12km away there is a large supermarket, banks and ATM
machines and restaurants. Nearby historic Le Dorat with its medieval
alleyways offers a variety of excellent restaurants. Large,
well-equipped hypermarkets are within 30 minutes drive at Montmorillon
and La Souterraine. The latter has a TGV station offering (with a very
early start!) the opportunity of a day trip to Paris, where the 'step
on/step off' Seine river Batobus is within a few minutes walk of the
Paris train terminal. You can check out the Batobus on the web.
How to get here
You can reach us by air, we are about fifty minutes drive from Limoges
and Poitiers airports. Both are well served by budget airlines, average
flight time from the UK is about an hour and a half. We recommend car
hire at the airports or we can collect you, by prior arrangement. You
will need a car if you want to do any touring.
Alternatively you can get here easily by car. Motorways in France are
much less busy than those in the UK, with plenty of comfort stops. We
are about six hours' driving time from the Channel ports. We would be
happy to send you full information on the best routes as we want you to
have a stress-free journey with no trouble finding us.
Prices
Privacy, peace and tranquillity, all for just 425 Euros per week in the
high season. At other times the price drops to only 290 Euros.
If you would like to have a welcome pack of groceries when you arrive,
just tell us what you need. We would be happy to do this at cost.
If you think you may not feel
like cooking on your first night, we offer three-course meals (first
night only please, and with prior notice) for only 15 Euros per
person. We will include a bottle of wine with our compliments.
