Restored two bedroom stone cottage
Canal & riverside village of Lucy sur Yonne, Burgundy

Lucy sur Yonne is a tranquil pretty village in northern Burgundy, with the Canal du Nivernais and the River Yonne meandering through. The bar is quite convenient and open all year round. A local baker delivers delicious bread and croissants daily and a cheese & a grocery van twice a week. You just need to listen for the van's horn announcing it's arrival around 8 am.

The cottage is near to the church and the bells ring during the day, but not at night! It’s something you easily get used to and its lovely to hear from afar when taking an evening stroll along the river and canal or up in the woods near the local Chateau.

There are a couple of restaurants in Coulanges sur Yonne (2km), several in Clamecy (9km) and Vezelay(20km) and many dotted around in the villages along the river and canal. There is a local railway halt in Coulanges and a station in Clamecy. The city of Auxerre is around 40km or 40 minutes by car and 45 minutes by train where there is a large selection of shops to visit, old buildings to explore, excellent restaurants to try and the Burgundian lifestyle to discover.

Burgundy is divided into 4 areas - Yonne, Nievre, Cote D'Or and Saone et Loire. The village is in the Yonne (89), but very close to the Nievre (58) just a few kilometres away. Lucy is around 2 hours from Paris by car and around 2.5 hours by train which can be caught nearby in Chatel Censoir, Coulanges sur Yonne or at the terminus in Clamecy. You can also change onto another local branch line down through the Morvan National Par to Autun which is a delightful journey.

Burgundy is blessed with many rivers and canals, of which the most notable in our area are the River Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais. They meander through the countryside, often criss-crossing or side by side and frequently joining forces to give long stretches of shimmering navigation rich with fish, wild aquatic life & water fowl. It is also rich in bird life and flora & fauna and the famous escargots which are jealously protected. Now we think it’s one the most peaceful, natural and unspoilt area of France we’ve seen and not overrun with tourists who mainly cruise through on the canal.

Vezelay has fabulous views from the Basilica where Richard the Lionheart lead the 3rd crusade. . If you manage to be there when the monks are singing/chanting then you are in for a real treat. There are also some interesting shops and excellent restaurants with a famous Michelin 3* in a nearby village.

There are also plenty of wine growers in the area, some good, some unbelievably good, and usually the local supermarkets stock local wine that you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else and they are well worth a try. Chablis is the most prestigious in the area and the village itself has a very good market on a Sunday morning. Other notable wines to be found are in Irancy, St Bris & Coulanges la Vineuse.

Auxerre is a delightful old city with many lovely shops and the famous cathedral and abbey that stand guard over the port and river. It also has a very large out of town shopping area, not a “mall” style but rather individual shops gathered on one place. Some of the most unusual activities to be seen occur in the towns where the canal & river pass through. There are a number of different aquatic sports including water jousting.

Eating out…. what can we say. This is Burgundy and wherever you go there are places to eat that suit every pocket, one of our favourites near by has just 4 tables inside with four, 4-course menus priced between 8€ - 14€. However, be warned, sometimes they are not always open every day and some local restaurants are only open at lunchtime. An unusual location that you may not think of immediately are railway stations of a reasonable size like Auxerre which is always busy with a very efficient service and is good value for money.
