The gite is just 3km from the pretty village of Gouarec, where
the river Blavet meets the Nantes-Brest Canal. The village has all
amenities, a supermarket, bank, post office, and restaurants. The canal
towpath is ideal for walking or cycling, winter and summer. Close by is
the Abbey of Bon Repos, situated on the side of the canal; this
picturesque, historic Cistercian monastery is a delightful picnic spot
and on Sunday mornings has a small produce and craft market. Each summer
the Abbey hosts the largest Son et Lumiere in the area.Ten minutes drive
by car is the Lac du Guerledan, the largest lake in Brittany, with
beaches & watersport facilities and an excellent outdoor centre with
over 10 kms of cycle track at Mur de Bretagne. In Brittany, market day
means fete day and there is not a town or village that does not hold its
own unique type of market. It is worth taking time to explore the
markets of Brittany, with their varied seasonal sights, smells and
sounds.
The region is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline and
ancient towns and from our Gite much of historic Brittany is within easy
reach. St Malo is a living museum where you leave your car outside and
walk through cobbled streets or stroll the ramparts for views of the
yacht dotted Atlantic. It has a sandy beach with rock pools where kids
can safely paddle. Just upriver is the medieval town of Dinan with its
13 Century cathedral and quaint half-timbered houses. You can take a
cruise on the Rance estuary from here. Further west lays the Gothic
abbey of Mont St Michel cut off from the main land at high tide.
Brittany’s south coast, the Gulf of Morbihan is a maze of rocky bays and
sandy coves. Carnac is famed for its megalithic remains from the
Neolithic period In addition to 2,792 menhirs, the area is studded with
burial places, semicircles and tumuli.
Quimper, to the west, is famous for its handmade pottery (faience) which
has been produced here since the 17th century and a visit to the
workshops is not to be missed. Close by is Pont-Aven, a postcard pretty
fishing village made famous by Paul Gauguin
Ile de Brehat is on the northern coast, and you will find this beautiful
island something to remember. About one and a half hours drive away but
allow the day. A short boat trip takes you onto the island where no cars
are allowed and even the police ride bikes. Hire a bike and see the
rugged pink coast, a fantastic day.
