Rocreuse Cottages look onto a fine courtyard in the French classical tradition, enclosed on four sides by handsome buildings, entered by an arched gatehouse. The owners live in the imposing manor-house to one side. On the other side there are fine stables. The cottages are in the wings, making up the four sides. At the front, the cottages look onto the courtyard, but at the rear they open directly on to a spacious garden (two acres of lawn & mature trees) and the very large swimming-pool, 13m x 6.5m. The property is approached by a fine tree-lined drive (so there is no passing traffic) and surrounded by lovely peaceful countryside. Inside, the houses have been beautifully modernised without losing their traditional character, with much use of traditional tiles, fine wood floors & beams; some furnishings are modern, some good-quality antique, and the beds have modern bases & mattresses. Despite the elegant architectural setting, the atmosphere, the 'ambience', is homely, cosy and peaceful. With lovely towns nearby to visit, a fine house, pool & garden, and pretty countryside, this is a base for a memorable holiday.

AROUND AND ABOUT, there is much to see………… The house is on the edge of a picturesque region known as the Montagne Noire which is fascinatingly different from the wine-growing plain of the Carcassonnais. Further afield is the Mediterranean coast & the mountains of the Pyrenees, fine cities like Narbonne, Perpignan, Montpelier & Toulouse, two UNESCO-registered world-monuments, fortified Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. Old abbeys, churches, castles, picturesque villages; museums & art-galleries like those of Salvador Dali and Toulouse-Lautrec, or caves with prehistoric paintings. Nearly all water-sports are available within 50 mins drive, or visit vineyards & wine-cellars, shop in open-air markets for local produce, browse in fine shops, take part in festivals and village fetes, tour on quiet country back-roads where driving a car is still a pleasure, or paddle & swim from fine beaches which are not over-crowded.
 

The Cottages.

Each cottage has a ground floor with comfortably furnished living-room including a sofa-bed & television. The kitchen/dining-room is well-fitted for cooking & dining, with modern cooker & oven, fridge-freezer, micro-wave, dish-washer & washing-machine. Upstairs there are two good-sized bedrooms, one double & one with three singles, and modern bathroom with shower, hand-basin & w.c. Outside at rear there are sitting-out/dining areas & barbecue, direct access to the pool & garden, & views across the countryside.
