The village of
Courcelles les Montbard is very old,
the chateau and church dating from the 13th century. Built on a hill,
it overlooks the Burgundy Canal, which provides fishing, leisure boating,
and easy walking. The River Brenne flows nearby. TGVs stop at Montbard
several times a day. It is possible to spend a day in Paris, Dijon or Lyon
without the hassle of parking! Burgundy provides an abundance of art,
architecture, history, wine, good food and natural beauty; there are many
interesting places to visit. The Tourist Office in Montbard can provide
plenty of local information, in addition to the leaflets left in the
house.
Leisure Activities:
Tennis, horse riding, rock climbing are all available close to Montbard.
There are plenty of marked local walks. Swimming pool at Montbard, boats
for hire on the canal there and Veneray, bikes for hire in Montbard. There
are lakes nearby for swimming and water sports, with canoes for hire at
Cry-sur-Armancon. The Morvan Natural Park is a huge area where many
outdoor activities take place. There is a wide choice of restaurants, from
gourmet to traditional, all within reasonable distance.
Shopping:
Supermarkets and a wide range of shops are within a 10 minute drive. On Friday
morning there is a very good market in the square at Montbard, with clothes,
baskets etc, and in the market hall you can buy fresh fish, plenty of
cheeses and an enormous selection of meat and vegetables.
Facilities in the property:
The house is modern, light, comfortable and easy to run. The garden gives
plenty of space, and the views from all the windows are quite superb.
The living accommodation is on one floor, with a fully fitted and equipped
kitchen plus a separate eating area. The sitting/dining room has a large
table and seating for six next to the kitchen. At the other end, there are
comfortable couches, easy chairs and a stereo CD/cassette player with
radio.
Large French doors lead onto the east terrace, with superb views
over the valley. Garden furniture means breakfast, lunch and supper can be eaten
outside. The stars are quite something! The west window of the sitting
room has awnings, overlooks a very large terrace with garden furniture and
a built in barbecue.

One twin bedroom with an en-suite shower and toilet
leads off the sitting room. Two twin bedrooms are off a short corridor
that leads to the toilet. The bathroom next-door has a shower over the
bath. A boiler in the sous-sol (basement) provides hot water, and also
gives central heating in the winter. The washing machine and tumble dryer
are there too, with easy access to the garden. There is a boule court in
the garden, which has large trees for shade, plenty of ornamental and
fruit trees and permanent table and benches with a wonderful view of the
chateau. Cows sometimes visit the field next to the garden.
Parking is
beside the house. The property is fully fenced, with large gates
closing off the drive. This property is
not suitable for children under 7 years of age. Non-smokers only. No pets.
Change-over day Saturday. Arrival and departure times: After 5 o'clock on
day of arrival, before 11 o'clock on day of departure.
Electricity, gas and water charges are included in the rental rates.
Linen is supplied for beds, bathroom and kitchen. Blankets are available.
