Bed and Breakfast
accommodation and a Gite located in a 13th Century former Monks'
Residence. Our chambre d'hotes is situated on the Cotentin
Peninsula, and lies just north of St Lo between the charming villages of
St Clair Sur Elle and Pont Hebert, just 2 miles from the N174.
Only a leisurely hour's drive from Cherbourg, or the airport at Caen (45
minutes away), the house is within easy reach of the North's historical
invasion coastline and the West's clean, sandy beaches, the sea warmed
by the gulf stream.
La Chapelle dates from the 13th century, the dwelling formerly
being a monks residence, with the gardens having been used to grow their
vegetables. The 4.5 acres, bordered by a small stream, are now home to
our two pet dogs, ducks, hens, cat and donkey, and are also a haven to
the nesting swallows and owls. The sun travels from the back of the
house to the front during the day and happily hovers facing the patio in
time for evening aperitifs. The pace of Normandy life is rather relaxed
and unhurried and the countryside is the world of farmers - lush and
constant.
Bed and Breakfast:
The main house can sleep 14 people. 4 rooms are double en-suite bedrooms
and the family room is next door to the bathroom. There are twin bedded
rooms as well. Everybody has breakfast together in the dining room,
usually consulting maps before the day's outing. Our familiarity with
the area can help you get the most from your excursions.

The Studio Gite:
Le petit Hirondelle stands a little lower than the main house, near the
stream. Newly renovated, it sleeps 2 adults with their baby or child.
The kitchen/diner, has a cooker, microwave, coffee-maker, fridge/freezer
and washing machine. The bathroom is situated on this level. A spiral
staircase leads you up to a vaulted ceiling, beamed room, having a
double bed, sofa and video. The gite is light, airy and modern with wide
stained floorboards, electric heating throughout, and looks over the
gardens and field.

Nearby towns and villages:
St Lo is a lovely town with markets on Friday and Saturday in the
central square. After devastation during the second world war, it has
developed into a clean and structured centre around it's ancient nucleus
and bordered by the river Vire. The old walls are floodlit at night and
although a quiet and peaceful town, there are many restaurants bars and
cafes to stroll to and visit. Parking is never a problem.
The large supermarkets, Champion and Intermarche are found in the
town, with L'Eclerc a few kilometres further on past Agneaux. 3 kms.
east of La Chapelle is St Clair sur elle with the church at its centre.
There are 2 boulangeries, a boucherie, doctor, dentist, pharmacist and
La Poste. Le Bar de Soleil has a plat du jour most days at lunchtime and
the small supermarket is friendly and helpful. 5 kms west is Pont Hebert
with a larger supermarket and a hotel restaurant, Les vieux Logis. If
you prefer to eat chez nous, just ask us.
Places to visit:
The Normandy invasion beaches and cemeteries, are some of the most
important features of the area, stretching from Utah along the eastern
coastline as far as Arromanches where you will find the remains of the
Mulberry harbour. Together with the museums, they are all just a few
miles away, reached through beautiful countryside, full of stone
farmhouses and grazing cattle. You will also want to visit Pointe du
Hoc, Port en Bessin, Bayeux, Mont St Michel, Avranches,
Villedieu-les-Poeles, Caen, Deauville, Pegasus Bridge, the Chateau at
Balleroy and the forest of Cerisy. Go to see the amazing museum of wood
at the Chateau de Montfort where snowy owls sleep in the dovecote or
walk around the beautiful Abbey d'Hambye.
