Carcassonne at night The rampart walls from the garden

Square Tower Cottage,  Trivalle, Carcassonne
4 bedrooms,
2 bathrooms, sleeps 6/8

The Cottage, in the old historic quarter of Trivalle, at the foot of the city walls of Carcassonne, is in the heart of this medieval city which is UNESCO-registered as one of the great monuments of the world -- yet it enjoys a peace & quiet & natural beauty more associated with the countryside.  This is largely thanks to two unusual features; it has a lovely 200 sq. metres garden at the rear and a vehicle-free street at the front. The garden is particularly unusual in streets, which preserve the medieval pattern of crowding houses tightly together for mutual defence.  Today, these quaint winding narrow streets are a joy to explore.

200 yards from the house, these streets lead you to the fine old shops & restaurants of the Trivalle where respect for good food, good wine & a rich history go hand-in-hand  --- and to a flight of steps which provide a way into the old city which few tourists know. From the ramparts of the Square Tower one can look down into the garden of the house. It is the starting-point of a journey rich in history & architecture -- and rich in the café-life, boutiques & colourful town-squares which are quintessentially French. But as well as the old city there are delightful canal & riverside walks which lead directly into the countryside.

Courtyard garden The cottage front view Twin bedroom Double bedroom

The three-storied house, 120 sq. metres in all, with open-plan access to each floor has three bedrooms (two double beds, one with three singles) and an upstairs sitting-room/TV room which can be a fourth bedroom.; two bathrooms ; large downstairs  living/dining area ;  a pretty well-equipped kitchen (cooker, fridge-freezer, micro-wave, washing-machine etc) ; a delightful balcony at first-floor level (breakfast with views of the city walls) and rear-access to terraces & garden (with dining-furniture & bbq). The house has central heating & open log-fire.

There is plenty of car-parking within 100 yards. However it is possible to have a good holiday here without a car -- and still tour this beautiful wine-growing region, mountains & coast -- making use of flights to Carcassonne or nearby Toulouse, taxis & public transport. Advice available on car-hire. Bikes available at the Cottage.
