Chateau de Senechaux, Bourdeilles,
Dordogne. This romantic and enchanting chateau, with it's four towers, is one of the most attractive in the Dordogne, set in a stunning location on the banks of the picturesque river Dronne. The village of Bourdeilles has another castle which is open to the public, and there is also a variety of small shops, three restaurants and two small bars. There are also, of course, some very good bakers and a patisserie. Approaching through two large iron gates into the courtyard you can take the steps up to the terrace, filled with sunshine from March through to October, and offering breathtaking views of the flowing river and village. The well sheltered private gardens are in full view of the river Dronne, and there is a pergola leading you to the overhanging buttress on the river; a perfect place with a magnificent view, to sit and while away the hours or enjoy a spot of fishing.
The Chateau: Entering through the arched doorway into the carved, paneled dining room, one is taken with the atmosphere; the huge beams, magnificent stone fireplace, massive table seating 20; reminiscent of the Mediaeval banquets befitting such a grand building. The shutters open on to a large terrace, with a beautiful view across the Dronne. From here, a flight of sweeping stone steps lead in to the garden. It is spacious and furnished throughout with antiques, in typical French style, creating a comfortable ambience. All the main rooms have high ceilings, many fabric covered walls, lots of wood paneling, tapestries, paintings and a magnificent Venetian chandelier. The family sized kitchen, with it's own courtyard, leads from the dining room through a small reception area into the main salon. A beautiful room, with silk walls and gilt mouldings with an adjoining intimate double bedroom and bathroom. The magnificent walnut spiral staircase will take you to the first floor, where you will find four large, comfortable bedrooms, traditionally French in style, 3 double and a twin, all with en-suite bathrooms. On the second floor, there are four further intimate bedrooms, two with en-suite in one half, with the other two sharing a bathroom.
The Fishermans Lodge: Charming and romantic, with a mezzanine floor housing a double bed, reached by an open tread staircase. The open plan downstairs comprises a dining / living room with a grand open fireplace, a kitchen area, bathroom and toilet. There are additional sleeping facilities by way of a double bed settee or two Z beds. The kitchen is self contained, with the sink, fridge and cooker hidden behind purpose built cupboards in dark oak, completely hidden from the living area. The bathroom is in a single story extension and has a vanity unit, large shower and wc. We recommend a visit to the owners website for more detailed information, availability and booking forms.
