In the heart of the Grande Champagne, the Premier Cru of the Cognac growing district. Set amidst rolling unspoilt countryside and surrounded by rural tracks, this part of the Charente is perfect for walking and cycling. The cottages are in the tiny hamlet of Champagnoux where there are no shopping facilities, the nearest town is Segonzac which is approximately 3 miles away. It has a selection of shops, a supermarket and the University of Cognac which runs courses for tourists as well as professionals. The splendid hilltop city of Angoulême is approximately 40 minutes drive, which has many interesting old buildings and the remains of the medieval chateau. There is an excellent selection of small restaurants, some of which offer live entertainment. The town hosts a vintage and classic car rally in September, and for those who enjoy water sports try Le Plan d'Eau de la Grande Prarie, where you can sail, swim, windsurf etc. Jarnac, approximately 15 minutes away, has a small covered market and a pleasant pedestrianised town centre. It's possible to hire canoes on the river, or enjoy a trip on a motor launch.

A favourite town is Cognac, a 20 minute drive, which offers an exceptional range of shops. There are large supermarkets, a covered market area and a beautifully maintained communal park with a child's play area with swings and animals. Other popular trips include Saintes, famous for having 2 cathedrals and a splendid Roman theatre, and the pretty port of La Rochelle with its' interesting small shops and twin towers guarding the port. Further south is the picturesque wine town of St. Emilion, and of course Bordeaux.

The accommodation: The ancient stone cottages seem unchanged since time immemorial but L'Atelier and Les Vendangeurs have undergone thorough and sympathetic renovation.

Les Vendangeurs: is a substantial 18 century farmhouse, with a south facing walled garden, complete with a new swimming pool. There is an enormous kitchen/dining room and a large double height galleried living room with views across the vineyard. There are 2 double bedrooms, 2 twin bedrooms and 2 dormitories each with 4 single beds. The kitchen has a cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The property has access to a private tennis court approximately 150 yards away. 

L'Atelier: is a compact 2 storey gite, with its' own private south facing garden. There is a spacious, open plan kitchen/dining room/sitting room, extending for most of the ground floor. Upstairs there is 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom and a 3rd bedroom has bunk beds and 2 single beds, making the property suitable for 8 people. Guests at the property will normally have unlimited access to the swimming pool at Les Vendangeurs, less than 100 yards away.
There is ample parking at both properties.
