The Ermitage D'Orio, is a house of architectural interest, having been built for the granddaughter of Alexander Graham Bell. It is located 1.5 kms from the centre of the town of Hendaye, which is an Atlantic seaside resort that stands at the foot of the Pyrenees and just across the river from the Spanish border. The area forms part of the French Basque country, where many diverse activities and interests can be pursued. The Basque people are very proud of their culture which is very apparent and gives added interest to the many local fetes and festivals. The diversity of this region, with the beautiful safe sandy beaches for swimming, sailing and surfing, combined with close proximity to the Pyrenees which offer magnificent walks on well signed footpaths (chemin de Grande Randonnee).
The Spanish frontier is only 2 kms from the Ermitage D'Orio, which offers many opportunities for excursions by car or train to this interesting area of the Spanish Basque region.
This area has one of the most green and pretty countrysides in France, with the picturesque villages of flower bedecked houses of white timber, square steepled churches and the 'Fronton' which is the pelote wall for one of the fastest ball games in the world. Golf enthusiasts have a choice of more than 10 courses within 20 kms of the property.
The towns of Biarritz (20 kms), Saint Jean de Luz (10 kms) and San Sebastian (20 kms) all offer a wide variety of shops and markets, plus further afield are the towns of Bayonne (30 minute drive), with it's Musee Bonnat and the famous Musee Gugenheim, (just 1.5 hours drive away) in Bilbao.

The Accommodation:
Forming part of the house, but being completely independent with it's own entrance, it is ideal for two people. The living room has TV. and there is a further summer lounge on the westerly covered terrace, which also affords lovely views to the sea. The compact kitchen has an oven, two ring hob, refrigerator and washing machine, and the bathroom which is en-suite to the double bedroom, has a basin, shower and separate toilet. 

There is private parking within the grounds.
