Villespassans         part of the garden

Villespassans, St Chinian, Herault.
Restored, 3 storey, stone built village house.
2 x twin bedrooms, sleeps 4/5

Set in a landscape of craggy gorges, sheltered valleys, silvery olives and scented pinewoods, Villespassans perches in the hills above the coastal plain. A fortified village in medieval times, its ramparts encircled church and chateau. Now, surrounded by vines and the aromatic garrigue, it offers holiday makers easy access to the sea and mountains. To the North the spectacular Parc Regional; to the Southwest the wild Corbieres stretching towards the Pyrenees; to the South, beyond a vista of hills and valleys, the Mediterranean.

Across the Pyrenees    Springtime in the region   River bathing

The Canal du Midi, Cathar castles and historic cities of Beziers and Narbonne are nearby as well as many sites of architectural, geological and historical interest. Sandy beaches are 40 minutes drive and, in summer, colourful local fairs, markets, concerts and spectacles take place. Local activities include tennis, river bathing, canoeing, windsurfing, superb walking circuits and exceptional rock-climbing pitches.

The village has a basic grocery store with more comprehensive shopping at St. Chinian (7km). There is a wide choice of restaurants all within 10 minutes drive. Situated in one of the great winegrowing regions Villespassans is ideally located for tasting and buying many excellent wines.

Dining area with stairs up                           Twin bedroom

This south-facing stone built house was originally a section of the ramparts. Whitewashed walls, terracotta floors and beams create an atmosphere of quiet simplicity. Furnishings reflect the character of the house combining comfort and convenience with authenticity. The thick walls ensure a cool interior in summer heat. A secluded courtyard garden, roughly paved in stone, enjoys daylong sunshine. Shaded by olives and cypresses it is a wonderful place to unwind and relax enjoying the cicada's song or drowsing in the stillness of a shimmering afternoon.

The ground floor kitchen/dining room which is equipped to a high standard, has a stable door opening on the garden. The washing machine is in an adjacent out building. There is a twin bedroom on the first floor with a further twin room and a shower room with toilet on the second floor. There is also a seating area with panoramic views to the south. Bedrooms have sprung mattresses, reading lights, electric fan, books and radio.

Villespassans is 20 minutes from Autoroute A9. The nearest airports are Carcassonne (1hr), Perpignan and Montpellier but Nimes, Toulouse and Gerona are also viable. Beziers and Narbonne are accessible by TGV and Narbonne is the terminal for Motorail from Calais.
