La Fortinerie, nr Mouliherne,
Loire Valley.
La Fortinerie is an 18th century farmhouse with outbuildings, situated equidistant between Mouliherne and Vernantes approximately 3 minutes drive away. The resident English owners have gone to great lengths to retain the character and charm of this old property, whilst including all amenities and comforts to make it a lovely place to stay. Mouliherne is a small village situated in a fruit growing area set amidst picturesque countryside and pine forests. The village is built of a local limestone called ‘Tuffeau‘ and is typically French in its appearance. Tuffeau is quarried locally, (frequently from underneath the houses themselves, providing excellent cellars or ‘caves‘. Larger caverns are now used for growing mushrooms or storing wine. The area where these caves are most noticeable is close to Bourgueil and Saumur where many have been converted into dwellings over the centuries, some of which are still occupied today and are known as the troglodyte caves.
In Vernantes a local market takes place on Wednesday mornings; there is also a bar and a restaurant serving typically French cuisine of good value, most other essentials are available both in Mouliherne and Vernantes. Both villages offer butchers, bakers, café/bars, lunchtime restaurants and there is a large supermarket in Vernantes. La Fortinerie is about 20 minutes from the town of Saumur, 40 minutes from Tours in the east and Angers in the west, all of which are sited on the river Loire and are of historic interest and yet another 40 minutes to the north is Le Mans, famous for its 24 hour motor car and motor bike endurance races and old town center. The many magnificent chateaux of the Loire and Vienne are also within easy reach. The local vineyards offer facilities for wine tasting and the well known Anjou Rose, Saumur ‘method Champenoise‘ and Chinon Red wines are readily available. For the sporty types there are excellent golfing facilities at Bauge and Les Sept Tours, each within 20 minutes of Mouliherne. Tennis courts on the municipal camping site at Vernantes and swimming at the nearby lake in Mouliherne. There are several large lakes for your enjoyment in the area, the largest of which is at Rille, which boasts a restaurant, boating and windsurfing facilities. The area is surrounded by woodland with lovely walks and plenty of wildlife. The forest tracks are ideal for horse riding, cycling or simply walking in the peace of the forest.
