Restored Maison de Maitre, Moux, Corbieres,
Languedoc The property is a restored Maison de Maitre at the edge of Moux, a village in the Corbieres wine region of the Languedoc in south west France. Moux is a typical working village of the Languedoc, set in a landscape of vineyards, cypress trees and garrigue. It has a bakery, chemist, small shop, bar/restaurant, and a doctor who will make house-calls. Behind the village is the Montagne d'Alaric, the last of the Corbieres hills: it's a favorite walk of about 2 hours to the top - where you can see the Mediterranean and the great panorama of the Pyrenees - on a clear day. Across the plain you can see the Montagnes Noires, part of the Cevennes, offering shady walks beneath chestnut trees.
The house is imposing with a formal front garden featuring statues and
a fountain. Two sets of steps lead up to the front door, which opens to
a long wood-paneled hall.
Everything in the house is on a large scale, with high ceilings and
marble fireplaces in most rooms. Upstairs there are six bedrooms and
three bathrooms (one en-suite). Downstairs there is one bedroom (with
en-suite bathroom), a comfortable book-filled sitting room, and a
downstairs toilet. The most striking room in the house is the big (45'x20')
open-plan kitchen/dining room/living room.
The kitchen has lots of worktop space, a dishwasher and a serious cooker plus a second oven, with a large table by the windows for informal meals, or chatting to the cook. The other side of the room has a dining table for up to 10, and sofas by the raised fireplace. Double doors open to the west-facing, balustraded terrace overlooking the pool - a favorite spot for aperitifs. You can walk down from the terrace to the lower courtyard with its old barns and stables and into the walled garden. The house is owned by a mosaic designer, and a professional painter: the bathrooms & kitchen feature our own hand painted tiles, and there are many examples of our mosaic designs both inside and out - and the house is full of paintings.
The little woodland, home to red squirrels, nightingales and hoopoes, provides shade on the lawn by the pool. The pool itself, is 12m by 8m and has underwater lighting, plus a child-safety alarm. The pool and garden are not overlooked by anyone else. The Languedoc region is ideal for walking, wine, bird-watching and wildflowers. There's lots to explore locally: Cathar castles, mediaeval villages and sandy beaches. It boasts two world heritage sites: the Canal du Midi and the mediaeval Citadel of Carcassonne. The cuisine blends the richness of Gascony with Catalan spiciness. We can provide maps and recommendations for places of interest, restaurants and bars. The high Corbieres, hardly touched by agriculture, is one of the least populated parts of western Europe, a place where you can drive for an hour and pass only a handful of cars. Here there are plenty of places to swim, walk, cycle or just enjoy a drink in a village under the shade of the plane trees. The river Aude, which gives its name to the department, runs by the next village. and the Canal du Midi is only a couple of miles beyond.
The picture-book mediaeval citadel of Carcassonne (served by Ryanair) is
half an hour to the west : to the east is the old Roman port of Narbonne
with miles of sandy beaches beyond. Spain is just an hour away..
