Mas de L’Elze, Rocles,
Ardèche, France. The Mas de L'Elze is a rambling collection of old stone buildings, clinging to a sun-drenched, south facing slope on the edge of the Ardéchois Cevennes. In the past, these buildings served a multitude of purposes typical of the local countryside: a silk-worm loft, a drying and smoking area for chestnuts, a barn for storing hay and raising goats for their cheese. Now, they have been painstakingly and lovingly transformed into a set of completely independent luxury houses, from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Each gite has an outside dining area equipped with a BBQ. All houses share a large 15m x 5m swimming pool and Jacuzzi and, for those of you wanting to stay in touch with the outside world, a wireless ADSL connection is available in each gite. The closest town to the Mas de L'Elze is Largentière, dating back to medieval times, retaining its walls, gates and ancient winding cobbled streets. En route from there to Aubenas, you will find Balazuc, designated one of the most picturesque villages of France. The majestic gorges of the Ardèche, famous for their natural beauty, are a short drive away. Closer by are the valleys of the Beaume, Drobie and Chassezac, less well-known, but no less beautiful. The mountain range of the Tanargue forms a backdrop to the setting sun in the west. You can enjoy the countryside while relaxing in the sun with a glass of local wine; alternatively, should you wish to get a little closer to nature, many opportunities for horse-riding, climbing, mountain-biking and hiking (straight from the door) are available in the region. Canoeing on the Ardèche river is very popular and bathing or fishing in the clear, cool local rivers are pleasures not to be missed. There are many caves to see locally including Aven D'Orgnac where there are often son et lumière events. Day-trips to Orange, Avignon and Nîmes are within easy reach. The Properties: La Grange (sleeps 6-8) is a house on two and a half levels for six/eight people. It is the original barn of the mas; the goats had only just left the bottom floor when we started restoration! The entrance at road level leads into the kitchen and dining area, with a shower room behind. Above, there is a large mezzanine with two single beds. The living room, with a magnificent view to the south, is through a stone archway from the kitchen. Just in case you choose to take our holidays out of season, there is a large fireplace for the long winter evenings. There is a double sofa bed for extra guests. The two main double bedrooms are downstairs, where the goats used to be! There is also a luxury bathroom and a "cave" complete with washing machine (shared between all 3 gites). Outside, there is a large stone-paved patio with a walled flower garden.
