The French country weekly market experience can be enjoyed not only at Chalais, but also at the neighbouring towns of Ribérac, Coutras and Barbezieux. Soak up the atmosphere, taste the region's local produce - foie gras, magret de canard, the famous Charentais melon, not forgetting cognac and pineau. While away time at the many fine restaurants specialising in traditional Charentais cuisine. Or just stay home, and enjoy the excellent facilities that this property has to offer. Places to visit include Chalais' 13th century château, cloisters and 12th century church - midnight tours every Wednesday. Further afield (between 15 minutes and 1 hour) you can visit the Monolithic church at Aubeterre, be in the heart of the St Emilion wine region, or visit the famous brandy producers in Cognac. Alternatively, head east toward the fabulous Dordogne and the famous towns of Brantôme (the Venice of South West France) or Périgueux, the 'Walnut Capital'. The coast is an hour's drive away. For unspoilt fishing villages or seaside resorts take your pick! The South Charente is a walker's paradise. Discover the varied flora and fauna or the region along unspoilt country lanes and woodland paths. For the more adventurous there is horse riding, canoeing, both lake and river swimming, as well as cycling, fishing, tennis and golf all within 15 minutes drive. Many of the river and lakeside beaches offer bars, restaurants, beach volley, playground activities and waterslides. There are two small, picturesque 9-hole golf course within 15 minutes drive, and 18 hole courses at Angoulême and Cognac.
The Barn: has exposed original beams, central heating, and has been converted to the highest standard. There are two large, family bedrooms, each having a double and two single beds, and en-suite facilities (shower, WC, basin) and a third bedroom with double bed and vanity sink unit leading to cosy lounge area. Both lounge area and bedroom 3 lead via separate French windows onto a large west-facing balcony (6 x 2 m) with delightful unspoilt view of crops and woodland. The fourth bedroom, with vanity sink unit, is situated on the ground floor suitable for persons with limited mobility. The main bathroom is fully tiled comprising bath, washbasin and large shower with separate WC, bidet and hand-basin is also situated on the ground floor. A fully equipped modern kitchen with breakfast seating area leads to the spacious lounge/dining room with double patio doors. The patio opens onto a large south facing shaded terrace and garden with pétanque area and table seating 14.
The Cottage: This delightful Charentais cottage, beautifully renovated and fully modernised whilst maintaining original features (stonework and exposed beams), is ideally situated for those seeking the perfect hideaway surrounded by picturesque rural countryside at its best. It sleeps 2-5 people, and comprises fully equipped modern kitchen, spacious bedroom with double and single bed plus vanity sink; lounge/diner with bed settee incorporating feature fireplace and wood-burning stove; bathroom (separate bath and shower cubicle). Set in private enclosed garden with two terraces providing sun and shade, barbecue and garden furniture The superb 18m x 7m pool is set in an enclosed area of 300 m² with a locking gate for security. The pool, surrounded by wooden decking, palm trees, exotic plants, sun loungers and hammocks, is at its most spectacular when illuminated on balmy evenings for those magical midnight swims. Alternatively, admire the view of the pool from the upper terrace eating area where you will find a 4 ring hob, large paella gas ring, barbecue, sink, work tops and electric points. |
