Champ Vieil

Champ Vieil, Gindou, Nr Cazals, Lot.
Beautifully Restored Farmhouse, 5 Bedrooms, sleeps 11/13.

Standing in its own undulating farmland in the Lot region of south west France, Champ Vieil consists of a courtyard of buildings formed by the house, barn and farm buildings - all built in local stone. It has been beautifully restored by a team of skilled carpenters and masons into a property that is ideal for two families.  It overlooks its own fields and extensive woodland beyond. The home retains many original features, such as the wine cave which is still used for making wine from the adjoining vineyard. From the terrace and pool the grass meadow, surrounded by walnut trees, slopes gently away to the woodland and further vineyards. A track to the side of the house continues on through the woods and fields eventually coming out at the quaint village of Les Arques. Most meals can be taken at the large outdoor table on the terrace or one or two additional tables can be moved to the terrace next to the pool if required. There is an upper balcony offering a super view of the valley.

Champ Vieil is ideal for children of all ages. Outside there is a large shaded sandpit and a swing for younger children, and the terraced swimming pool, measuring 9m x 4.5 m, is fully fenced off for safety and from the pool you look west down the meadow to the woodland beyond. Although the pool is not heated it is adequately warm during the main summer months. The pool is generally opened in May and closed in October although please check for any adjustments when booking. For older children, there is table tennis and plenty of space for running around and playing ball games.

Cazals is three miles away and has a well-stocked supermarket, charcuterie, post office, restaurants and lots more and a market every Sunday. At the lake there is play equipment and tennis courts. Canoeing on the Lot, horse-riding and bike hire is available nearby. Local interests include visits to Cahors  and any number of the vineyards that line the Lot valley; the wonderful Rocamadour and caves nearby and famous St.Cirq Lapopie - said to be one of the prettiest villages of France. Not to mention the various chateaux, such as Bonaguil.

On the ground floor, the large oak beamed kitchen (20' X 18')  has an enormous table with benches seating 14 people. It is equipped with gas cooker, fridge, dishwasher and microwave. French doors (south and west) open on to terraces and garden (with loungers, table, parasol etc.) This is the heart of the house around which everything else revolves. In the utility/laundry room there is a freezer, washing machine, ironing board. The games room,     originally used as an additional wine store room,  is now a table tennis room, and there is also a downstairs toilet, easily accessible for swimmers. A beautifully hand made staircase leads to the:

First floor  where you will find the large summer sejour above the kitchen. Children often sneak up here when it's too hot outside - the wooden varnished floor makes a good play area. (One end of this room is muslin screened with a double bed should this be required.) Through double doors you can sit on the west facing balcony and look over the pool. It’s our favourite spot for relaxing with a glass of Cahors wine while watching the sun drop below the trees on the hill beyond the valley. There is a TV (no video) for French channels only. Steps up from the summer sejour take you to the snug winter sejour with its wood burner, making this a cosy retreat at cooler times of the year. There is a desk and telephone here. E-mail access is available via your laptop pc provided you have the correct adapter for the French system.
