Le Pigeonnier, near Bergerac,
Dordogne/Lot. Bergerac is a charming, prosperous town situated on the Dordogne river. The old quarter with its 15th/16th century houses, and wine and tobacco museums is particularly charming. There is a wonderful twice weekly fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market held around the ‘Eglise St Jacque’, and there is a very good selection of interesting modern shops. Le Pigeonnier: is
located two miles from the hamlet of Parranquet which is equidistant
from Villereal and Monpazier. Bergerac on the Dordogne lies to the north
and Villeneuve on the Lot is to the south. This is an unspoilt part of
the Perigord/Dordogne and it is of particular interest as the region of
the medieval Bastide towns. Within walking or cycling distance there are
good quality hard tennis courts, an attractive swimming pool and a
village shop where bread is baked every day; also delightful walks with
bird-watching and a variety of wild flowers including the Bee Orchid.
Within easy car rides are chateaux, interesting little market towns,
vineyards (with tastings), and rivers for boating or canoeing. For a
day's outing there are famous pre-historic caves at Lascaux many
beautiful and historic towns on the Dordogne, the unspoilt banks of the
river Lot. Le Pigeonnier is a converted pigeon loft, and as such is a quirky three story building with one room on each floor. The accommodation is fine for two people; most love it, but a few loathe it. It is peaceful and private and affords all the joy of French country living. One enters into the kitchen diner, which has a nice clay tiled floor, a south facing window with a lovely view, a gas cooker, a fridge and all the necessary accoutrements. A miller’s stairway goes up to the bedroom which has a large and comfy double (sofa) bed, chest of drawers and hanging space. This room is a joy with two large windows overlooking the countryside and through which the sun streams in the morning. The floor is of chestnut and the pyramidal ceiling with old beams is quite special. Downstairs is the bathroom with a shower, wash basin and loo, and a door out onto the lower ground terrace. Outside: Loungers and outdoor furniture are provided for relaxing in the and eating al fresco. If the farmhouse opposite is not occupied, the pool is available for the ‘Pigeonnieres’ Otherwise there is a very nice pool about a mile away provided by the local baker. |
