Peace! Croquet! Oysters!  Unwind in tranquil Charentais countryside in a beautifully converted windmill in meadows behind our Charentais farmhouse with its lovely gardens around. The mill has its own approach and is not overlooked by the house. Try your hand at croquet if you wish, be as sociable or retiring as you please. Or make the most of St Savinien’s situation at the heart of the Saintonge to explore the many attractions of the area, including the historic towns of La Rochelle, Rochefort, Saintes and Cognac.
Visit beaches (30 to 50 mins), the offshore islands of Ré, Oléron and Aix, beautiful towns and châteaux, cycle along quiet tracks and lanes, sample local seafood, enjoy the Charente river and picturesque St Savinien (5 mins) with local restaurants, shops and supermarket. Over-looked by the church perched on its rocky promontory is the town’s shady park and leisure area, with swimming pool, mini golf and miniature port, set on the island formed by the oxbow of the river and the canal.

Well-lit accommodation for two people is on three floors:  living room on the ground floor, upstairs to the carpeted galley kitchen and shower room, up again to the double bedroom  from which there are lovely views.  The kitchen has been thoughtfully equipped with fridge, mini-oven, double electric hob, electric kettle, plentiful (matching) crockery, cooking utensils and knives that cut!  Although facilities are important, we have paid equal attention to aesthetics as the mill’s romantic ambience is its essential ingredient.

Outside there is garden furniture, including lounging chairs, a portable barbecue, natural shade and lots of private space. The garden itself has been described as a mini nature reserve. Ornithologist visitors counted 33 different bird species in two days. Buzzards and kites soar overhead, nightingales sing in April and May, hoopoes feed on the lawn. There are wonderful wild flowers too – bee and lizard orchids among them.
