Family Owned 15th Century Castle, Haux, near Bordeaux Less than an hour from the Atlantic Ocean, Chateau Lagorce is a family owned, 15th century French castle in the village of Haux, near Bordeaux. Our Chateau offers golf holidays, wine holidays, leisure holidays and with our own private carp fishing lake - fishing holidays. It is within 30 minutes of 20 excellent golf courses, 10 minutes from the River Garonne and River Dordogne and 45 minutes from the town of Arcachon and the Atlantic Ocean, and its endless beaches of white sand, dominated by the Pyla Dune, the highest in Europe, which marks the entrance to the Bassin d'Arcachon. We have many quality vineyards and wineries of the Bordeaux region nearby. Along with our own leisure facilities like golf practise area, snooker table, table tennis, table football as well as acres of grounds with a cave network and small river you will never be short of things to do! If you do tire of the chateau, the list of places to visit is endless. The Dordogne is one of the most picturesque departments of France, made famous by the variety and beauty of the landscape through which the river flows. The open rolling countryside changes to wooded cliffs, then to neatly patterned fields of tobacco and maize, then to idyllic pastoral valleys. Picturesque old villages sit perched like eagles' nests on hilltops or set on sunny hillsides. Castles standing proudly against remarkable backdrops of plunging valleys crown the Dordogne River; most have been carefully restored, with tall mansard roofs and high towers, and are recognised as prime examples of military architecture dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Beynac, Les Milandes, Bourdeilles, and Bonaguil are just a few of the châteaux, which are well worth a visit. In the caves and grottoes you can gaze on drawings dating back to 35,000 years before our times, and at Tursac, children will appreciate the Pre-historic Park where the life of Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal man is re-constituted. To the west of the Dordogne is the Gironde, with Bordeaux as its capital, and one of the world's great wine-growing regions. It is characterised by vineyard country inland and miles of beautiful silver sandy beaches along the Atlantic coast. The elegant city of Bordeaux is a splendid mixture of different architectural styles and has plenty of good restaurants, as would be expected in one of France's leading gourmet regions. Marvel at the historic town of Arcachon. The magnificent 19th century "Ville des Quatres Saisons" on the bay, with its sandy beaches, fishing villages and oyster ports, or visit the medieval citadel of Saint Emilion, a unique site in the heart of one of the world’s most beautiful vineyards.
